What's Inspiring Us From The Global Material Landscape
The Pinnacle of #MaterialInspiration - Loro Piana
The Biotechnology Company That’s Making Faux Leather - For Real
A fascinating behind-the-scenes view into the technology company that is re-creating leather - except without any animal products. How is it different from current faux leather on the market? Well, this actually uses skin cells to create leather by brewing collagen which, interestingly enough, is the most essential ingredient in leather - not the animal skin. The result is “biologically - and perceptibly almost indistinguishable from animal leather."
A Visual Journey Into Naturally-Dyed Textiles
The New York Times takes us on a beautiful and in-depth journey to one of the homes of natural-dyed textiles - Teotitlán del Valle. The runoff liquid waste from textile factories ends up, inevitably, in water streams and is often full of toxins - from sulfur and formaldehyde to lead and mercury. Most residents in the village are in the weaving trade, and today they’re leading the charge in commercializing the process of natural dyes.
Sustainable Fashion Front & Center at MFW
Our perennial style crush Livia Firth brought sustainable practices in fashion into the spotlight with the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, which capped off Milan Fashion Week at the Teatro alla Scala. In addition to shining a spotlight on best practices in sustainable supply chains, the awards also payed homage to fashion “Made In Italy” - home to the some of the finest craftspeople in the world.
While we are always looking to add more organic textiles to Le Souk, we’re also proud to showcase artisan textiles, and will be growing this category significantly in the coming months. Stay tuned…
In Spite Of The Naysayers, Athleisure Holds Its Coveted Place at Fashion Weeks
While we’ve been reading about the rise (or fall?) of the once ubiquitous athleisure trend, it seemed to be alive and well based on Vogue’s coverage of the latest fashion weeks. We saw Gigi Hadid’s continued embrace of stylish athletic wear, Kendall Jenner’s off-duty casual look in Milan and the announcement that Jessica Biel is launching a new collection.
For all our designers also continuing to embrace the trend, we couldn’t recommend the latest fabrics from Oratex more highly.
